There are 2 changes TGR readers will want to know about for this Spring’s TAB tour:
- According to my sources, there is no longer a 6L6 Komet as of April 30. Instead, both Komet heads are running EL-34 tubes and one is serving as a read-to-go backup if needed.
- The Leslie G-37 stayed at home (this is typical for TAB).
Otherwise, the equipment remains consistent with the newly-overhauled rig Trey debuted at MSG in 2016.
The photos below are from Stubb’s Waller Creek Amphitheater in Austin, TX (4.29.17).
Amplification: Trainwreck Komet 60 (x2) — Rhythm amp has NOS Phillips 6L6 tubes; Lead amp has NOS Mullard EL34 tubes (as of April 30, both amps are running EL-34 tubes and one is backup). Bruno Speaker Cabinets(x2) loaded with Celestion G12-65 Heritage Speakers. Victoria Reverberato.
Guitars: Koa #1.
Floor Pedals: Beigel Tru-Tron; Boomerang, Whammy II, CAE RS-10 Audio Switcher (see here for signal chain), Crybaby Wah, Ernie Ball Volume, Lehle Little Dual Amp Switcher, Boss FS-5 switches.
Rack Pedals: 2 x TS-808; Way Huge Supa Puss; Shin-ei Uni-Vibe; Klon Centaur; Alesis Microverb.
Rack (from top): Furman Power Conditioner, Korg DTR-2 Tuner, Ibanez DM-2000, TC Electronic D-Two, 3 x CAE 4×4.
Note in the below that there are only 3 Boss FS-5 footswitches instead of the usual 5; (1) “once” pedal for the Boomerang; (2) tap tempo for the Supa Puss; (3) mutes the DM-2000 digital delay (since it shares a slot in the CAE with the Boomerang). Switches 4 and 5, normally in place to control the Leslie, are not present since the Leslie isn’t in use.
In the below photo, it’s clear that the Bruno cabinets are labeled “A” and “B”. These correspond to the amp selector, with one cabinet powered by the El-34 Komet and the other powered by the 6L6 Komet. As of April 30, both Komets run EL-34’s and one is a backup to the other, meaning one of these cabinets is a dedicated backup, as well.
Below we see the rack is unchanged, as are the rack pedals and amplifier array. One fun addition — a footswitch at the bottom right that engages Trey’s talkback mic so he can communicate with the band via their monitors.
When he runs two amp heads is he always using an amp selector and choosing one at a time? Or is he ever using both at the same time and how does that hook up work and why?

The Lehle amp selector chooses El-34 amp (lead) and 6L6 amp (rhythm). There are never blended.

Is Koa #1 rewired now to have the coil tap option switch (inner vs outer coils) instead of series/parallel, or do the older models still have series/parallel?
Any insight into the series function; since series requires both humbuckers to be on, how does that switch function in regard to the pickup selector?
A tech I spoke to when asking to have my guitar wired this way, mentioned a series/parallel option is wired so that it can only be in series when the pickup selector is on the neck position, and in middle or bridge position, it defaults back to parallel. Is this the case for the Languedocs?

There are 2 two-way mini switches
1) coil tap – runs each HB in single coil mode. Use the pup selector to select neck bridge or both
2)series/parallel – humbuckers are usually wired in parallel. This switch puts them in series – neck bridge or both. Produces a thicker tone with more sustain.
I’ve built two Languedoc “style” guitars with this circuit. It’s super versatile.
You can google the circuit and as long as you have 4wire pups you’re gtg…)! H

I believe the Ross Comp is there. It’s hiding out back of the Rack unit.
Great work with this site man. Freaking love it. Please never stop.
I know what guitar stand he’s using, but any idea what mics (vocal/instrument) and what mic stand he uses?

The guitar mics are a Shure SM-57 and a Royer SF-12. Not sure about the stands, but he has been using the SE Electronics GuitaRF filters on them.

My experience with the series switch is once engaged, the 3 way selector does nothing, is is the same in all 3 positions, as you are running all 4 coils in series. I’m not sure why your tech told you it would only work in the neck position but that’s not the case. There is a pretty good Languedoc Schematic here…

Would the G12-65 impulse responses in the open back 2×12 be the appropriate IRs to match Trey’s Cab?

Any idea if the Klon has become an Always ON pedal?

saw a pic from High Sierra, and looks like the rig has changed again. A Moogerfooger? Any updates?

I am searching for the specific pedal combo and settings of the pedals for the sound that Trey has been using on Gotta Jibboo during the TAB spring shows. Here is an example. https://youtu.be/dFBcLxI38nM around minute 28:00 you can hear exactly what I am talking about. My best guess is its the Digitech Whammy octave down setting, Cry Baby Wah, Klon or Tubescreamer or maybe both? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I’m hearing wah, Whammy Octave down, and and Tubescreamer(s). Nasty.
