Rack (from top): Furman Power Conditioner, Korg DTR-2 Tuner, Ibanez DM-2000, CAE Black Cat Vibe / CAE Black Cat Tremolo; 3 x Alesis Reverb units (1 Microverb, 2 Nanoverbs) 1 x CAE 4×4.
Here’s the full rig. Note the Deluxe at right is mic’d, while the one center is not; it’s used as a head that runs to the Bruno 4×12. It looks like Trey is still mic’ing with the AKG 414’s at this point.Circled in this photo is a big box Languedoc hollowbody that appeared very rarely on Phish tour. It appears to have a single humbucker. I don’t believe it was used during the festival. Here’s the full floor array. From left: Boomerang, Whammy, TS-9 (2), Wah, RS-10, Goff Trek, Ernie Ball Volume pedal. There’s a tuner between the RS-10 and the Trek. Here’s a close-up of the TS-9 pedals clearly showing the ANALOG.MAN labels. This is a shot from the control tower jam. Trey is scrolling through the presets on the Whammy II. The Boomerang is behind his right hand. And another pair of Analogman Tube Screamers is at right. Trey has also said that he used the TC Electronics Nova Repeater Delay during this jam. Here’s a look at some of the rack stuff. Here’s a close-up of the wah; clearly a Crybaby. Here’s the Leslie and a look at Koa 1.
To be completely honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if Teese started this rumor himself.
The RMC3 is supposed to be tunable to “any” wah sound right? So obviously it COULD be a RMC inside that Crybaby, but no. I don’t think it was.
Does everyone really think that Trey is so obsessed with gear, and hiding it from people so they don’t steal his tone, that he actually had someone gut both wahs and switch the guts out? But yet we’ve known for decades it’s been two tubescreamers? A ross compressor? None of that adds up. Especially considering he did a gear tour in 2010…
I kind of figure that when he did that tour, *and was still using this “Crybaby” wah*, he would have mentioned that if it was something special. He didn’t, he says “my wah pedal” and moves right on.
Any insight on what speakers he had in the Bruno back then? I’ve read but never confirmed that they were possibly Celestion Gold. It seems like that would be too much unnecessary power at 50 watts per speaker when just the Deluxe is pushing them. Thoughts? Thanks!
A higher watt speaker is used when you want the amp tone replicated “clean & pure” with no speaker distortion.
So a 22w Deluxe pushing a 50w Speaker is a common setup.
Maybe I’m just missing it, but what did Trey use for his octive pedal during this time? He used it a lot during that time but I’m just not seeing how he did it.
Isn’t there some mystery/debate about the Wah being a Crybaby or a Teese RMC3 built into a Crybaby shell?

I always heard they were “Tone Tubby Purple Hazes”. Now if only boutique speaker companies would post their frequency spectrum analysis…

Pretty sure the Nova Repeater wasn’t available in 2003!
